In The Orchard, we will continue to promote a love of reading! We share lots of books and stories throughout our curriculum. We also read with the children 1:1 every day. The children engage in Big Read sessions each day, this is where we teach specific reading skills and share a class book.
The children should aim to read at home at least 3 times per week. Children will make more progress the more times they read so this will really help them to improve.
Homework for children in the The Orchard is reading that is set along with any bespoke pieces of worj that is given. You can support us in school by reading at home as much as possible and remembering to sign their reading records. Please read with your child at least 3 times per week. They will have a reading book and a library book. If your child is part of the Read, Write Inc group then they will also have a ditty book to read.
PE class is once a week. Please send in PE kit (black shorts, white t-shirt and Velcro pumps) in a drawstring PE bag, so that it can be stored easily. These will be left in school for the half term then returned to you for washing. Please ensure that every piece of clothing is labelled.
Water is provided in school at snack time and whenever required. Please send a piece of healthy snack in for your child to eat. We also have fruit which the children are able to have at the end of the day.
Phonics is the teaching of sounds in order to learn to read and write.
Children are grouped according to their reading ability for phonics in order to ensure that they are learning exactly what they need and make the best possible progress. We learn sounds along with Fred the Frog and these are built into words for reading and writing. Words become sentences and sentences become stories. A wide world of possibilities is opened up for your child.
